What happens when you are driving and you make or receive a call on your mobile phone. Way back in 2005 I had just finished a photo shoot on Springfield Wine Estate just outside Robertson and was on route back to Cape Town when I came across this horrific accident about 5 km outside Robertson. I normally never stop at accidents but this was so bizarre I had to stop and take a photograph. Only once I had stopped and saw the damage from close up I simply assumed no one could have survived this crash. The steel barrier with the support poles had gone right through this car for about 25 metres. I asked a traffic official how many people died. He looked at me and said “you will not believe me”. The driver of the car was a mother who had her young child strapped in a safety chair directly behind the drivers seat. She was talking on her cell phone lost concentration on where she was driving and hit the steel barrier head on. Believe it or not, mother and child survived this horrific crash without a scratch. Two lessons learned don’t use your mobile when driving and keep your children strapped in.
